AFSM Level I Program
Level I Program Overview

The AFSM Level I Program provides comprehensive training in basic massage therapy, anatomy and physiology, and practical pathology. Students will gain skills in communication, ethics, professional boundaries, and hands-on techniques to perform a full-body, relaxation massage.

Note: Required textbooks are not included in tuition. Estimated total cost for books: $210.
Notice: The cost of a massage table, required supplies, and the MBLEx licensing exam are not included in tuition.

Massage Therapy

Students will learn the science of massage, factors affecting quality of touch, communication and interviewing skills, treatment documentation, draping and positioning, use of lubricants and tools, body mechanics, professional boundaries, benefits/contraindications, hydrotherapy, and more. By the end, students can perform an hour-long, full-body relaxation massage.

Anatomy & Physiology

Anatomy and physiology form the basis for all health care providers. Students will receive an introduction to the anatomical, physiological, and kinesiological relationships of the human body.

Licensure Notice: Completing this program does not guarantee licensure. You will also need to complete a minimum of 225 hours of Level II electives before you can graduate. After you finish the program, you must pass the MBLEx exam to be eligible for licensure in Virginia.
